Brazilian teenager Joao Fonseca produced one of the biggest shocks of the French Open on Friday, rallying from two sets down to defeat three-time champion Novak Djokovic in a dramatic third-round clash at Roland Garros in Paris.
The 19-year-old #NextGenATP star looked overwhelmed early as Djokovic took control of the contest, winning the first two sets. But Fonseca staged a remarkable turnaround, taking the next three sets to seal a 4-6, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, 7-5 victory in a four-hour and 53-minute thriller.

Djokovic, chasing a record-extending 25th Grand Slam title, appeared in command after racing to a 3-1 lead in the fifth set, but Fonseca refused to fade. The Brazilian saved crucial break points in the fourth set while serving at 3-4, 15/40, turning the momentum in his favour and forcing a decider.
The 28th seed then closed out the match in style, firing three consecutive aces when Djokovic threatened to extend the contest. It marked Fonseca’s second win over a Top-10 opponent, following his earlier upset of Andrey Rublev at the 2025 Australian Open.

The defeat ended Djokovic’s run in Paris and further opened up the men’s draw, especially after Jannik Sinner’s earlier exit, leaving the tournament without two of its leading title contenders.
Statistically, Fonseca hit 68 winners to Djokovic’s 70, while also committing more unforced errors (47 to 39), but his composure at key moments proved decisive. Notably, it was only the second time Djokovic has lost after leading by two sets, the previous instance also coming at Roland Garros in 2010 against Jurgen Melzer.
Fonseca now advances to the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time and will face either 15th seed Casper Ruud or 24th seed Tommy Paul for a place in the quarter-finals.
